Most paddles under $100 use fiberglass and call it a day. The JOOLA Astral gives you a genuine sandblasted carbon fiber face in the Perseus shape, which means it grips the ball for spin instead of just pushing it back. It is the paddle to buy when you have decided pickleball is not a phase.
Sandblasted Carbon Fiber
The sandblasted texture is what produces spin. On serves and third-shot drives you will see the ball dip inside the baseline instead of sailing, and on dinks you get enough bite to angle the ball off the court. Fiberglass paddles at this price cannot do either reliably.
Perseus Shape
The Astral uses the elongated Perseus outline, so it carries reach at the kitchen line and leverage on the drive. If you eventually move up to a Perseus Pro V or a Double Vision, the shape will already feel familiar, which is not true if you started on a generic widebody.
Feel-Tec Pure Grip
JOOLA's tackier grip compound comes standard. It handles humid summer play on outdoor courts better than the thin stock grips normally found at this price, and it is one less thing to replace in month two.

A note on tournament play. JOOLA does not publish a USAP certification for the Astral. If you intend to enter sanctioned events, look at the Double Vision or the 3S Dual instead.
