Frequently Asked Questions about Yonex Nanoray Badminton Rackets
Absolutely. While Yonex has introduced the newer Nanoflare Series, the Nanoray line remains an incredible value for players who want a Head-Light racket. The frame aerodynamics are still top-tier for speed and defense. If you are a club player looking for a high-performance racket under $70, models like the Nanoray 72 Light offer nearly identical handling to newer models but at a fraction of the price.
Both are ultra-lightweight rackets designed for lightning-fast reaction times, but there is a slight weight difference:
- Nanoray Light 18i: Typically a 5U weight (approx. 75g-79g). It is extremely flexible and forgiving, making it the perfect first racket for beginners.
- Nanoray 72 Light: This is often even lighter, coming in at 6U (approx. 70g-74g). This feather-light weight allows for effortless swings and instant defense, making it ideal for doubles players who struggle with wrist fatigue during long matches.
For most pure beginners, we recommend Nanoray. The Astrox Series is head-heavy, which helps with power but can feel "sluggish" or tiring for untrained wrists. The Nanoray is Head-Light, meaning the weight is focused in the handle. This makes it much easier to swing, helps you learn proper technique without straining your arm, and gives you faster reactions at the net.
While some Nanoray Light frames are rated up to 30 lbs, we generally recommend sticking to 24-26 lbs for these ultra-light models. Because the frame is so light (6U/5U), stringing it too tight can make the sweet spot very small and increase the risk of frame collapse if you clash rackets with your partner. 24-26 lbs offers the best balance of power and durability for club play.
In doubles, the game is won or lost on flat drives and net interceptions. You don't have time for a big wind-up. The Head-Light balance of the Nanoray series allows you to move the racket head instantly to block smashes or intercept a drive. It is designed purely for speed and maneuverability.
