How to Select the Perfect Cricket Ball for Your Game

Cricket Ball

A Cricket Ball is used all around the world to play the sport cricket. They can come in different sizes, colors and shapes. A normal cricket ball is made from  layers of twine wound around a cork core, inside a leather shell. There are 6 raised stitched seams that make the ball swing, spin and more. The leather comes in 3 different colors. The colors don’t change the performance of the ball.

A mainly used ball for professional cricket is the SG Club:

SG Club (Red)

SG Club (White)

SG Club (Pink)

Others:

SG Shield (White)

Color

As said before, the color of the ball doesn’t necessarily change the game significantly.  A red leather ball is the same as any other colored ball like a white or pink ball. A red ball is primarily used in test matches. While a white ball is used in T20 and ODI Cricket. 20 overs and 50 overs respectfully. A pink ball is used in all formats of cricket especially in day and night games where a match goes past the setting sun.

Size

Cricket balls come in 2 sizes. A junior ball weighs 135 grams while a senior/professional ball weighs 156 grams. Cricketers under the age of 13 use the junior ball. After that they transition to the adult sized ball. A junior sized cricket ball has a circumference of between 20.5 and 22 centimeters. An adult ball is between 22.4 and 22.9 centimeters. This will help you pick out the right size for you or your child.

Characteristics

A cricket ball has multiple characteristics. From swing, spin, bite, grip, skid, bounce, seam, drift and cut. The new ball bowled by a pacer makes the ball swing in the air. There are 2 types of swings: conventional and reverse. To make the ball swing you need to hold the seam straight and release the ball with a straight seam. This will lead the ball to either swing in or out depending on the batsman. The ball has to be shiny for this. However, an old red ball can reverse swing. The ball starts swinging in or out then it swings the other way. This is very hard to do but the reward is very good. Spin is when the ball lands and turns off the pitch either in or out. There are 2 types of spinners: leg and off spinners. Off spinners turn the ball into a right handed batsman while leg spinners turn the ball out. When releasing the ball you need to spin the ball in such a way that it revolutes the way you want it to spin when it lands. Bite is when the ball spins off the pitch and picks up speed. Grip is when the ball holds back and loses speed after it bounces. Bounce is when pacers get extra bounce off the pitch. Seam is when the ball catches on pace after the ball bounces for pacers. Drift is when spinners swing the ball through the air with a new ball. Cut is when the ball deviates off the pitch for a pacer. These are the different characteristics of a ball.

 Tennis Balls

Cricket is also played in a tennis ball. There are multiple leagues in the world that use tennis balls or tape balls. There are 2 main colors of tennis balls, red and yellow. Both are identical, not counting the color difference.

Yellow tennis ball (Khanna Super)

Practice Balls

There are many different types of practice balls for different kinds of training. Such as weighted balls, are used for power hitting and strengthening different forms used in cricket. You can use the weighted ball to improve power and form in your bowling, throwing, and a variety of shots.  A hanging ball is used for stroke play. You hang the ball down from a tree or a ceiling and knock the ball tied at the end of it with your bat. There are balls that help you with bowling to enhance performance in a straight seam, swinging the ball, turning the ball. We also have balls that can be used for multiple purposes, but are mainly used for beginners entering cricket. These are Prosoft and Supasoft cricket balls. One really good tool for spinners to use is the revolution ball. This helps the spinners get as many revs as possible when they bowl. Doing this everyday will increase the turn significantly.
