The $400 Question
Every cricket bat buyer faces this decision: spend $150–$800 on English willow, or $40–$150 on Kashmir willow. The answer depends on what you play, how often you play, and what you expect from your bat. We've handled both types daily since 2021 — here's the real difference.
Side-by-Side Comparison
| Feature | English Willow | Kashmir Willow |
|---|---|---|
| Price | $150–$800 | $40–$150 |
| Ping (rebound) | Excellent — ball springs off the blade | Good — slightly deader feel |
| Sweet spot size | Larger, more forgiving | Smaller, requires better timing |
| Weight | Lighter (2.08–2.14 lbs typical SH) | Heavier (2.14–2.20 lbs typical SH) |
| Grain structure | 6–12 visible straight grains | Less visible, irregular grains |
| Knock-in time | 6–8 hours mandatory | 2–4 hours or ready-to-play |
| Durability | 2–3 seasons with care | 3–5 seasons, harder wood |
| Performance lifespan | Peaks after knock-in, then gradually declines | Consistent from day one, less peak performance |
| Feel | Responsive — you feel the middle | Solid — less feedback through the hands |
When to Buy English Willow
Buy English willow if:
- You play hard-ball league or club cricket
- You face bowling over 65mph
- You can feel the difference a good bat makes
- You're willing to invest 6–8 hours in knocking in
- You play 20+ games a season
Real talk: English willow is worth it if you play regularly. The larger sweet spot means mishits still go for runs. The lighter pickup means faster bat speed. After 3 overs of facing a quick bowler, you'll notice the difference.

When Kashmir Willow Is the Smarter Choice
Buy Kashmir willow if:
- You play tape-ball or tennis-ball cricket
- You're a beginner still learning technique
- You play fewer than 10 games a season
- You're buying for a junior who's still growing
- You want a bat that's ready to play immediately
- Budget is under $150
Real talk: Kashmir willow gets unfairly dismissed. For tape-ball cricket — which is what most recreational players in the US actually play — Kashmir willow is better than English willow. The harder wood handles the heavier tape ball without cracking. Many of our best-selling bats under $100 are Kashmir willow, and the players love them.

The Grade Factor — English Willow Only
English willow is graded 1–5:
- Grade 1: 8+ straight grains, zero blemishes. Professional. $400+
- Grade 2: 6–8 grains. The sweet spot. Excellent performance at $250–$400.
- Grade 3: 4–6 grains. Good club bat at $150–$250.
- Grades 4–5: Entry English willow. $100–$150.
Not sure how to read a bat's grade in person? Our Cricket Bat Grains & Grading Guide (2026) walks you through how to count grains, what blemishes are acceptable at each grade level, and the red flags that signal an over-graded bat. Essential reading before spending $300+.
Kashmir willow isn't graded the same way — the wood is harder and grain patterns are naturally less consistent. A $100 Kashmir willow bat will outperform a Grade 5 English willow bat in durability, but the English willow will feel better when you middle it.
The Hybrid Play — Our Recommendation
Many of our customers own two bats:
- English willow — for matches and net sessions with the hard ball
- Kashmir willow — for tape-ball games, practice, and lending to friends
Total cost: $250–$400 for both. That's less than one premium English willow bat, and you get the best of both worlds.
FAQ
Q: Can I use a Kashmir willow bat in league cricket?
Yes. There's no rule against it. But you'll notice the difference facing a hard ball at pace — the smaller sweet spot punishes mishits.
Q: Does Kashmir willow need knocking in?
Less than English willow. 2–4 hours of light knocking in is recommended, especially on the edges. Some Kashmir willow bats come pre-pressed and are ready to play.
Q: Can you tell the difference by looking?
Yes. English willow has visible straight grains on the face. Kashmir willow has a more uniform, slightly darker appearance with less defined grain structure.
