Cricket Protective Gear Sizing Guide: Pads, Gloves & Helmets That Actually Fit
Ill-fitting protective gear is dangerous and uncomfortable. Pads that are too short leave your knee exposed to fast bowling. Gloves that are too loose reduce bat control. Helmets that don't sit right compromise your peripheral vision. This guide covers everything you need to know about sizing cricket protective equipment — with real measurements, not guesswork.
Cricket Batting Pads: How to Measure and Choose the Right Size
Batting pads are sized by the distance from the center of your kneecap to the top of your ankle bone. This measurement determines Small Boy, Boy, Youth, or Adult sizing:
| Size | Knee-to-Ankle | Approx Age / Height |
|---|---|---|
| Small Boy | 28-30 cm (11-12") | 5-7 years, under 4'0" |
| Boy | 30-33 cm (12-13") | 8-11 years, 4'0"-4'8" |
| Youth | 33-37 cm (13-14.5") | 11-14 years, 4'8"-5'4" |
| Adult | 37-42 cm (14.5-16.5") | 14+ years, 5'4"+ |
How to measure: Sit down with your leg extended. Measure from the center of your kneecap straight down to the bone at the top of your ankle (medial malleolus). Don't measure to the floor — only to the ankle bone. The pad should cover from mid-thigh to the top of your foot, with the knee roll sitting directly over your kneecap when you're in your batting stance.

Cricket Batting Gloves: Finding the Right Fit
Batting gloves are sized differently from pads. They're categorized as Junior, Youth, or Adult, and the fit is determined by palm width and finger length:
| Size | Palm Width | Fits Hand Circumference | Approx Age |
|---|---|---|---|
| Junior | 8-9 cm | Under 17 cm | 5-10 years |
| Youth | 9-10 cm | 17-20 cm | 10-14 years |
| Adult | 10-11 cm | 20-23 cm | 14+ years |
| Adult XL / OS | 11+ cm | Over 23 cm | Large adult hands |
Fit check: When wearing batting gloves, your fingers should reach the end of the finger stalls without cramping, and there should be no more than 5mm of space at the fingertips. Too tight: you'll lose circulation and feel. Too loose: the gloves slip during the shot and reduce control.

Cricket Helmets: Measuring Head Size Correctly
Helmet fit is the most important safety decision you'll make. A loose helmet can shift on impact; a tight one causes headaches and distraction. Use a soft measuring tape around your forehead, just above the eyebrows and ears:
| Head Circumference | Helmet Size | Typical Age |
|---|---|---|
| 50-52 cm | Junior / Small | 5-8 years |
| 53-55 cm | Youth / Medium | 8-12 years |
| 56-58 cm | Adult Medium | 12+ years |
| 59-61 cm | Adult Large | Large adult |
Most modern cricket helmets have an adjustable dial at the back of the head — tighten it until the helmet sits firmly without pressure points. The grille should be 2-3 finger-widths from your nose when you look straight ahead. Browse our Cricket Helmets Collection for options from Shrey, Masuri, and SG.
Thigh Guards & Abdominal Guards (Boxes)
Thigh Guard Sizing
Thigh guards attach to the top of batting pads and protect the outer thigh — an area pads don't cover. They're sized to match your pad size (junior, youth, adult). The guard should overlap the top of your pad by at least 1 inch — if it doesn't, size up.
Abdominal Guard (Box) Sizing
Boxes come in Junior, Youth, and Adult sizes based on waist measurement. A correctly sized box should fit snugly inside your compression shorts or underwear without shifting when you move. If it's uncomfortable in your batting stance, it's either the wrong size or worn incorrectly. Never play without one — even in nets.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if my batting pads are the right size?
Stand in your batting stance. The top of the pad should cover your lower thigh (about 3-4 inches above the knee), and the knee roll should sit directly over your kneecap. If the pad digs into your ankle or leaves your knee exposed, it's the wrong size.
Should batting gloves feel tight or loose?
Snug — not tight, not loose. Your fingertips should touch the end of the finger stalls without curling, and you should be able to close your hand into a fist without the gloves restricting movement. Loose gloves slip during shots and reduce bat control.
Can my child use adult-sized protective gear?
No — adult-sized pads and gloves on a junior player are dangerous. Oversized pads shift during running and leave gaps. Adult gloves make it impossible to grip the bat properly. Always buy gear that matches the player's current size, not something they'll "grow into."
How often should I replace my cricket helmet?
Replace your helmet after any significant impact (ball hitting the grille or shell hard), or every 3-4 years of regular use. The foam liner degrades over time, especially in hot/humid conditions common in US summers. A helmet that's been in a hot car trunk all season has compromised protection.
