The three bag types
Wheelie bags — the full-kit standard
A full kit — bat or two, pads, gloves, helmet, shoes, accessories — is heavy, and wheels mean you roll it instead of carrying it. Wheelie bags have a rigid or semi-rigid base with inline wheels and stacked compartments: bat sleeves, a main compartment for pads and helmet, and outside pockets for shoes and valuables. The base also keeps your gear off wet grass. Get one if you carry a full kit or walk any real distance from car to ground.
Duffle bags — compact and carryable
The traditional cricket bag: a soft rectangular body, shoulder strap, bat pockets at the ends. How to pack a cricket bag
Bats first. Into the bat sleeves or end pockets, blade down, handle up and reachable. No bat sleeves? Lay them flat along the bottom, faces together — and never pile heavy gear on the blades.
Pads and helmet in the middle. Pads flat across the main compartment; helmet face-up on top of them, never grille-down at the bottom of the bag. If the bag has a helmet compartment, use it — the helmet is the most crush-sensitive thing you own after the bats.
Gloves and small gear on top. Batting gloves lose shape when crushed, so they ride on top. Grips, sunscreen, and valuables go in the outside pockets.
Shoes in the vented pocket, in a loose bag. Keeps dirt off your whites while letting moisture out — never seal damp spikes in plastic overnight.
Making a bag last
Bags die at the zipper or the wheels, almost never the fabric. Pull grass and debris out of the wheels every few months and give the axles a shot of silicone spray; run a graphite pencil along sticky zipper teeth; and after a wet match, empty the bag and let it air out — sealed wet pads breed mildew that never leaves. Lift a wheelie over gravel and curbs rather than dragging the base.
