Why Your Cricket Helmet Choice Matters
A cricket helmet is the single most important piece of protective gear you'll buy. A ball traveling at 90 mph delivers roughly 1,100 Newtons of force — enough to fracture a skull or worse. The helmet you choose needs to absorb that impact, stay in place during your stroke, and not obstruct your line of sight. At TopCricketStore, we stock helmets from the three biggest brands in cricket: Shrey (India's dominant helmet maker), Masuri (UK-engineered, worn by international Test players), and Gray Nicolls (the UK heritage brand with GN-quality protection).
Shrey Helmets — The Indian Standard
Shrey has been making cricket helmets since 1981 and today dominates the Indian domestic and international market. Their helmets are worn by Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Jasprit Bumrah. Shrey's innovation edge is in materials: they were among the first to introduce titanium grilles (lighter than steel, stronger than steel), and their Masterclass series uses a carbon-fiber-reinforced outer shell that's 15% lighter than traditional ABS shells.
Shrey lineup at TopCricketStore:
- Shrey Classic Steel Helmet — $59.99. Entry-level steel grille, adjustable chin strap, ABS shell. The best-selling budget helmet in India for good reason: it meets ICC safety standards at a price that doesn't break the bank. Ideal for junior players and weekend cricketers.
- Shrey Masterclass Air Titanium Helmet — $159.99. Titanium grille (40% lighter than steel), 14 airflow vents, memory-foam padding that molds to your head shape. This is the helmet Kohli wore during the 2023 World Cup.
- Shrey Masterclass Air 2.0 Titanium — $239.99. The 2026 update: even lighter, better ventilation, improved grille geometry for wider peripheral vision. This is Shrey's flagship and worth the extra money if you bat in hot conditions where ventilation matters.
Masuri Helmets — UK Engineering, Test-Level Protection
Masuri is the official helmet supplier to the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), and their OS3 series is worn by Joe Root, Ben Stokes, and Pat Cummins. Masuri's focus is on impact absorption: their helmets use a multi-density foam liner (different foam densities in different zones) that's designed to crush progressively on impact, slowing the ball down over more distance than a single-density foam can.
Masuri lineup at TopCricketStore:
- Masuri OS3 Steel Helmet — $129.99. Steel grille, ECB-compliant multi-density foam, adjustable rear cradle for a snug fit. The entry price for Masuri-quality protection.
- Masuri OS3 Titanium Helmet — $199.99. Titanium grille with the same OS3 impact absorption system. The grille geometry is slightly wider than the Shrey equivalent, giving marginally better peripheral vision — a detail that matters when you're picking a googly out of the hand.
Gray Nicolls Helmets — Heritage Brand Protection
Gray Nicolls (GN) has been making cricket equipment since 1855 and their helmets reflect that heritage: classic design, excellent build quality, and conservative but effective protection. GN helmets tend to fit slightly rounder heads better than Shrey or Masuri (which suit more oval head shapes).
GN helmets at TopCricketStore:
- Gray Nicolls Test Opener Helmet — $89.99. Steel grille, adjustable fit, GN's signature navy-and-white colorway. A solid mid-range option.
- Gray Nicolls Legend Helmet — $139.99. Upgraded padding, titanium grille option available, slightly lighter shell construction.
Steel vs Titanium Grille: Which Should You Choose?
Titanium grilles are 35-40% lighter than steel and stronger at the same thickness. The weight reduction matters: a lighter grille means less neck fatigue over a long innings and slightly faster head movement. But titanium grilles add $60-100 to the helmet price. If you bat 20+ overs regularly, the titanium upgrade is worth it. If you're a tail-ender or a weekend cricketer, a steel grille helmet from Shrey or GN at $60-90 is perfectly adequate — it meets the same safety standards.
Helmet Sizing: Get the Right Fit
An ill-fitting helmet is almost as dangerous as no helmet — it shifts on impact and can expose your temple or the back of your head. Here's how to measure:
- Wrap a measuring tape around your forehead, just above your eyebrows and ears. This is your head circumference.
- Match to size: Small = 53-55cm, Medium = 55-57cm, Large = 57-59cm, XL = 59-61cm.
- Put the helmet on and adjust the rear cradle (all three brands have adjustable cradles). Shake your head side to side and up/down — the helmet should move with your head, not independently.
- The grille should sit about 2 finger-widths from your nose. Closer = better protection against a ball squeezing through the gap. Further = marginally better vision.
- Check the chin strap: snug but not tight. You should be able to open your mouth fully without the strap digging in.
Helmet Care & When to Replace
- Clean after every use: Wipe the interior padding with a damp cloth. Sweat degrades foam over time — regular cleaning extends helmet life by 1-2 seasons.
- Don't leave it in a hot car: Temperatures above 120°F can soften the ABS shell and degrade foam impact absorption. Store your helmet indoors, not in your trunk.
- Inspect the grille monthly: Check for bent or loose grille bars. A bent grille compromises the entire helmet because it transfers less force to the shell on impact. Replace bent grilles immediately — we stock Shrey and Masuri replacement grilles at our Edison store.
- Replace after impact: If your helmet takes a direct hit from a ball — even if it looks fine — replace it. The internal foam crushes on impact and doesn't recover. A helmet is $60-240. A skull fracture is priceless.
- Shelf life: Replace every 4-5 years regardless of condition. Foam degrades with age even if the helmet sits unused.
FAQ
Do cricket helmets expire?
Yes. Most manufacturers recommend replacing your helmet every 4-5 years, or immediately after any significant impact. The foam liner degrades over time — even if the helmet looks fine, the impact absorption capacity weakens with age and exposure to heat and sweat.
Can I wear a cricket helmet with glasses?
Yes — Shrey and Masuri both design their grille geometry to accommodate glasses. If you wear glasses while batting, look for helmets with adjustable grille positions (both Shrey Masterclass and Masuri OS3 offer this) and try the helmet on with your glasses before buying.
What size cricket helmet do I need?
Cricket helmets come in Small (53-55cm head circumference), Medium (55-57cm), Large (57-59cm), and XL (59-61cm). Measure around your forehead just above the eyebrows. If between sizes, go up — a snug fit is important, but a too-tight helmet causes headaches during long innings.
Are cricket helmets mandatory in USA Cricket leagues?
Yes — USA Cricket requires helmets for all batsmen, wicket-keepers standing up to the stumps, and any fielder within close catching distance. The helmet must meet British Standard BS7928:2013 or equivalent ICC standards.
Can I replace just the grille on my helmet?
Yes — grilles are removable and replaceable on Shrey, Masuri, and GN helmets. If your grille gets dented or bent, replace it immediately; a weakened grille compromises the entire helmet's protection. We stock replacement grilles at our Edison NJ store.
Which helmet brand do most international players use?
Shrey dominates the Indian subcontinent (Kohli, Rohit, Bumrah, Pant). Masuri dominates England, Australia, and New Zealand (Root, Stokes, Williamson, Cummins). Gray Nicolls has a smaller but loyal following among UK county players. All three meet the same ICC safety standards — brand choice comes down to fit, weight, and price.

The Shrey Masterclass Air 2.0 is our most popular helmet at the Edison store — the weight difference is immediately noticeable when you pick it up. But the Masuri OS3's multi-density foam is arguably the better impact protection system. Both are excellent. The Gray Nicolls Legend is the value pick — ICC-compliant protection at $139.99. Real Talk from Our Workshop
At our Edison NJ store, we've fitted hundreds of cricketers for helmets. Here's what we've learned that spec sheets don't tell you:
- Head shape matters more than features. Shrey helmets fit slightly narrower, more oval heads — common in players of South Asian descent. Masuri helmets fit slightly wider, rounder heads — more common in players of European descent. Gray Nicolls splits the difference. If a helmet doesn't match your head shape, no amount of adjustment will make it feel right.
- The grille gap is personal. Some players want the grille as close to their face as possible for maximum protection. Others feel claustrophobic and want more space. Both are valid — as long as the gap is no wider than a cricket ball's diameter at its widest point.
- Weight matters over a long innings. A 70g weight difference between the Shrey Air 2.0 (850g) and the Gray Nicolls Legend (960g) doesn't sound like much — until you've been batting for two hours in 85°F heat. Every gram counts when your neck is tired.

Try before you buy. Helmet fit is impossible to judge from photos. Visit our Edison warehouse, try on all three brands, and leave with the one that fits your head — not the one that matches your favorite player's brand. Shop cricket helmets →
