A cricket bat isn't maintenance-free — and the work it needs goes far beyond oiling. Professional bat services — knocking in, handle replacement, toe guard installation, grip fitting — can extend a bat's life by seasons and transform how it performs. We run these services daily in our Edison, NJ workshop. Here's what each service does, what it costs, and when your bat needs it.
Bat Knocking In: The Foundation
Knocking in compresses the willow fibers on the face and edges of a new bat, hardening the surface so it can withstand the impact of a cricket ball without cracking. A bat that isn't knocked in properly will crack, split, or develop surface fractures within the first few net sessions. It's not optional — it's the single most important thing you do to a new bat.
We offer two knocking-in services:
- TCS Bat Knocking — PVC Mallet (Linseed Oil) — $29.99. Our standard knocking service. Bat is oiled with raw linseed oil, then hand-knocked with a PVC mallet for 4-6 hours across the full face and edges. Includes toe guard check and grip inspection.
- TCS Outside Bat Knocking — PVC Mallet (Linseed Oil) — $39.99. Same process as above, for bats purchased elsewhere. Bring in any bat and we'll knock it in to the same standard.
Premium knocking option:
- TCS Bat Knocking — African Leadwood Mallet — Our premium service. Uses a denser African Leadwood mallet for deeper fiber compression. Preferred for high-grade English willow bats (Grade 1-2) where maximum face hardening is critical. Takes 5-7 hours.
- Outside Bat Knocking — Linseed Wax — Premium knocking service for bats purchased elsewhere. Same African Leadwood mallet process.
When Does a Bat Need Knocking?
- Every new English willow bat: Mandatory. Don't face a single ball before it's knocked in.
- New Kashmir willow bats: Recommended — Kashmir willow is harder than English willow, so the risk of immediate cracking is lower, but knocking still improves durability and performance.
- Used bats you're buying second-hand: If you don't know the knocking history, get it done. A partially knocked bat is more dangerous than an unknocked one — hard and soft spots next to each other create stress points.
Handle Replacement: The Surgery Your Bat Might Need
The handle is the most stressed part of the bat — it flexes on every shot and absorbs vibration from every ball. Over time, handles can crack, splinter, or develop a "dead" feel where the bat stops transmitting feedback to your hands. A handle replacement restores the bat's feel without replacing the blade.
- TCS Bat Handle Replacement — Full handle removal and replacement with a new Singapore-cane handle. Includes re-binding, re-gripping, and a balance check. Takes 2-3 days. If your bat is a high-grade blade that still has life in the willow, a $50 handle replacement is vastly cheaper than a $300+ new bat.
Grip Installation: Fast, Cheap, Game-Changing
A worn grip affects your control more than most players realize. When the grip loses its tack or develops flat spots, your bottom hand compensates — and that throws off your entire technique. We install grips on any bat in under 15 minutes.
- TCS Bat Grip Installation Service — Professional grip removal and installation. We'll recommend the right grip pattern (chevron, pyramid, hybrid) for your playing style and install it with proper overlap and tension. Bring your own grip or choose from our in-stock options.
Toe Guard Installation: Prevent the Most Common Fatal Injury
We covered toe guard products in detail in our toe guard guide, but here's the service side:
- TCS Epoxy Toe Guard Service — $20.00. Professional epoxy application — harder and more durable than rubber. 24-hour cure time required.
- TCS Rubber Toe Guard Service — $20.00. Professional rubber toe guard fitting. Done in 5 minutes while you wait.
- TCS Traditional String Binding — Cotton string wrapped and sealed. The classic look. 15-20 minutes in-store.
Scuff Sheet Installation
- TCS Bat Scuff Sheet Service — $10.00. Professional-grade clear scuff sheet applied bubble-free and trimmed to the edges. 10 minutes in-store.
Service Bundles: Combine and Save
Most players combine services for a full bat setup. The most common bundles:
- New bat setup: Knocking + scuff sheet + toe guard = complete protection out of the box. Add grip installation if you want a specific grip pattern.
- Mid-season refresh: Scuff sheet replacement + grip replacement + toe guard check. Quick turnaround — usually same-day.
- Bat revival: Handle replacement + full re-knocking + new scuff sheet + toe guard. For bats that have life left but need major work.
What We Don't Do (And Why)
We don't repair cracked blades. Once the willow itself splits — not a surface crack, but a structural split through the face or edge — the bat is structurally compromised. No repair will restore it to safe playing condition. We also don't sand or reshape bats — that removes willow mass and permanently changes the bat's weight and balance.
Why Use Our Workshop?
We knock in hundreds of bats every season. Our workshop is in our Edison, NJ store — you can watch us work on your bat. Every service is done by hand, not machine. We use raw linseed oil (not boiled — boiled linseed oil contains chemical dryers that can damage willow). If you're local, drop off your bat and pick it up when it's ready. If you're ordering a new bat online, add services at checkout and we'll ship it fully prepared.

Need Bat Work Done Before the Weekend?
Call or WhatsApp us. We'll give you a realistic timeline based on current workshop load. Some services (toe guard, scuff sheet, grip) are walk-in and same-day. Knocking and handle replacement need 1-3 days. We'll tell you honestly what's possible.
Before & After: What Professional Knocking Actually Does
A new English willow bat straight out of the wrapper has soft, uncompressed fibers on the face. Hit a hard leather ball with it and the fibers separate — that's a crack. Here's what 6 hours of professional knocking achieves:
| Before Knocking | After Knocking |
|---|---|
| Soft face — fibers yield on impact | Compressed face — fibers resist ball impact |
| Edges vulnerable to splitting | Edges rounded and hardened |
| Surface oil still wet/shiny | Oil absorbed into the compressed fibers |
| "Dead" sound on contact | Crisp "ping" — the bat is ready |
When to Schedule Bat Services Seasonally
Pre-season (March-April): Full service. Knocking for new bats, handle inspection for existing bats, fresh scuff sheet and grip. This is our busiest period — book 1-2 weeks ahead.
Mid-season (June-July): Maintenance. Grip replacement (sweat and wear peak in summer), scuff sheet check, toe guard inspection. Quick turnaround — usually same-day for simple work.
Post-season (September-October): Storage prep. Deep clean, light oil coat, scuff sheet replacement if needed. Store properly over winter and your bat is ready for pre-season nets without additional work.
FAQ
Q: How long does bat knocking take?
Standard service: 4-6 hours of hand-knocking, typically completed within 1-2 days. Premium Leadwood service: 5-7 hours, 2-3 days. During peak season (March-May), turnaround may be longer — call ahead.
Q: Can I knock in my own bat?
Yes, with a proper cricket bat mallet and patience. It takes 6+ hours of methodical work — an hour a day for a week is a common approach. The risk of DIY knocking is uneven compression, which creates hard and soft spots that lead to cracking. If you've never done it, your first bat is worth having professionally knocked.
Q: How do I know if my handle needs replacing?
Signs: the bat feels "dead" on contact (no feedback through the hands), visible cracks in the binding at the handle-shoulder junction, the handle flexes more than it used to, or you can feel a "click" when you twist the handle. If you notice any of these, bring it in for inspection.
Q: Do you service bats purchased from other stores?
Yes. Our "Outside Bat" services are priced slightly higher than TCS-purchased bat services, but we'll work on any cricket bat regardless of where you bought it.
Q: Can you ship my serviced bat back to me?
Yes. If you're not local to Edison, NJ, you can ship us your bat, we'll perform the services, and ship it back. Call or WhatsApp to arrange — we'll give you a timeline and total cost before you send anything.
